Looking at the work of Australian artist, Gemma O'Brien we are going to try our hand at some advanced lettering. Criteria for this assignment are as follows:
Choose a 2-4 word phrase( e.g. Reality is a Luxury, Worthy Delusions etc.) OR a longer word that can broken down into parts. ( e.g. Fearless >>>> FEAR LESS, Hopeful >>>>> HOPE FUL)
Create a grid or organized line structure to create the font within
Use a simple, SANS SERIF font in ALL CAPS.
Aim for consistency, neatness and alignment in the drawing of the letters. this is the ORDER part of the design.
Once you have pencilled this part you will then think of some organic, less structured designs to weave, obstruct or interact with your perfect letters. Think about how this introduction of organic design can create TEXTURE, LAYERS OF DEPTH, and expression within the design
Use your eraser to decide which parts of the overlapping linework will stay and which will be erased.
Add a drop shadow on one side of the letters to create contrast and depth.
Ink your design. Add stippling, texture and other details where needed
